Training Players to D&D 5e

The Lost Mine of Phandelver is the module provided in the D&D 5e starter set. The adventure opens with our intrepid players using their agency to edit the character backstory to explain how they all know the same dwarven miner, one Gundren Rockseeker. Shortly after meeting up with him in Neverwinter on the continent of Faerûn, he has to leave on urgent business before the supplies he ordered are ready to load in the wagon. Gundren will have a traveling companion for safety, one SIldar Hallwinter a retired war veteran and member of the Lord’s Alliance. He is tasked to investigate why a fellow member of the Lord’s Alliance, has disappeared while performing the task of establishing a constabulary in Phandalin. It is up to the characters to finish acquiring Gundren’s supplies and to meet him or his contact Elmar Barthen in Phandalin. Shortly before the journey’s end, they discover two horses sprawled across the road peppered with black, raggedly fletched arrows. Between the horses is a messenger bag the characters recognize as belonging to Gundren, the saddle bags on both horses are empty as well as a map case found when attempting to clear the horses from the trail.

This adventure is run with the core rulebooks, the Elemental Evil Players Companion, Sword Coast Adventurer’s Guide, the necessary errata and Sage Advice documents provided by WOTC. Time is taken to explain the ruleset, allow players to find their own answers, and discuss how characters can do virtually anything they can dream up. The following helper materials are also used: magnetic white board on an easel with color coded magnets, poster size maps with manila paper for fog of war effects, initiative cards, an array of Google Drive products and android apps.
